Dragon fruit dethrones durian in Vietnam’s export rankings
VU
Durian drops to third as dragon fruit leads with $93.8M in exports.
In early 2025, Vietnam’s fruit export landscape shifted as durian, once the top export, fell to third place. Durian exports dropped by over 69% in the first two months of the year, bringing in just $52.6 million — down from its $3.21 billion lead in 2024, according to statistics from the General Department of Customs.
Dragon fruit has taken the lead, with exports worth $93.8 million, accounting for nearly 13.7% of total fruit exports. Bananas climbed to second place, generating $71.6 million and surpassing both coconuts and durians.
In 2024, banana exports reached $380 million. China remains the main market, importing over 625,000 tons last year, making Vietnam the top banana supplier to China — surpassing the Philippines for the first time in a decade. Vietnamese bananas are favored for their quality, appearance, and lower shipping costs.
Besides China, Vietnam also exports bananas to South Korea and Japan. Prices in those markets are fixed yearly, while China’s are set weekly. For April 7–13, leading exporter HAGL raised its banana price to $12 per box, a 10% increase from the previous week.
