Target 100,000 tons per year for Senegalese tomato production.
In recent years, tomato production in Senegal has stagnated and is unable to achieve the expected volumes. New momentum is needed and officials say they are confident about the future of the industry.
The new management of SAED (National Society for Development and Land Exploitation of the Delta and the valleys of the Senegal River and Faleme), after field studies, will set up a program to strengthen self-sufficiency and food security.
SAED is confident that production could reach 100 000 tonnes of tomatoes per year. The establishment of new industrial units could provide new opportunities for farmers to increase their production of tomatoes.
Senegal, according to data from the CNCFTI (National Consultative Committee on the industrial tomato sector) produced 60,800 tonnes of tomatoes during the 2018/2019 campaign, whereas the initial objective was to reach 80,000 tonnes.
