The Cherry : first American fruit to enter Western Australia
MD
The state of Western Australia, which maintains its own regulations for imports, has authorized imports of American cherries.
Western Australia (almost half of the country in surface) has lifted its ban, after 10 years of negotiations, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The market for Western Australia (Perth) has now opened to U.S. producers who already export to Eastern Australia (Sydney, Canberra).
Producers of cherries from California, Washington and Oregon are looking forward to the opening of this new market. Imports of cherries in eastern Australia have reached 15.6 million USD in 2009.
The American producers hope that the decision will be extended to other fresh fruits.
