The halt in exports to Russia and Ukraine, which are among the main export markets for Turkish products, caused prices to collapse on the domestic market.
Turkey has ceased its exports to Russia and Ukraine since the start of the conflict on February 24. Products intended for export to these 2 markets, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and zucchini, were offered on the Turkish domestic market.
The oversupply caused prices to crash. Cucumbers and eggplants, the products whose prices had risen the most in recent weeks, saw a drop of more than 50%. This fall in prices was slowed down, due to the cold weather and flooding in certain regions of the country which reduced the supply.
But the approach of spring is synonymous with better weather conditions that will favor production. This will further increase the volumes available if exports to Russia and Ukraine are not reopened.
The sector is looking for alternative export channels, announced the Chamber of Agriculture of the Antalya region, of which 60% of fruit and vegetable exports are made to Russia and Ukraine.
