In Mexico the HASS variety is the most cultivated but other varieties like FUERTE, CRIOLLO, BACON, PINKERTON, GWEN, REED are also available.
Highly positive forecasts for the 2017/18 (July / June) marketing year for Mexican avocados. Hass avocados production is expected to reach 1.8 million tonnes and export volume to rise to 1 million tonnes.
According to the US Department of Agriculture's recent GAIN FAS report, Mexican avocado production has been boosted by better weather conditions and the effectiveness of phytosanitary pest control programs. The production forecast for the 2017/18 marketing year (July / June) is between 1.8 and 1.9 million tonnes.
For the same period 2017/18 exports should be close to 1 million tonnes. The volume exported will therefore be much higher than the 873,963 tonnes of the 2016/17 season and much better than the 960,362 in the 2015/16 season.
The United States is Mexico's leading avocado export market, consuming between 77% and 79% of total exports. Japan, Canada and European countries have increased their demand, but shipped volumes remain low.
