A complicated year for Mirabelle growers.
France
Sunday 14 September 2008
2008 isn't going to go down as a very good year fo Mirabelles. The year started off badly when 2/3 of Mirabelle crops were struck by frost earlier this spring. The weather continued complicating growers' lives when heavy rainfalls made it very difficult for them to harvest. This resulted in very small quantities (25 to 35% of the expected harvest), and of course a higher than expected price. A very bad news for this relativelly unknown fruit mostly grown in the East of France, as 70 to 80% of the world's mirabelles come from the Lorraine region in France.
