Japan issues mushroom warning
Japan
Monday 08 November 2004
The Japanese Health, Labor and Welfare ministry has told people suffering from kidney disorders not to eat a variety of mushroom known as Angel's Wings.
The warning comes after several cases of acute brain disorder across Japan have been linked to the mushroom, with people suffering from kidney problems appearing to be more at risk. At least two people have died after eating the mushrooms.
The ministry is to collect samples of the mushroom, whose Latin name is Pleurocybella porrigens, to check whether they contain any pesticides or other harmful substances.
