The cultivation of broccoli is progressing in Extremadura where it now totals 8,000 hectares.
The Autonomous Community of Extremadura (located in the south-west of Spain) recorded a x4 increase in its broccoli area over the last decade.
COAG (Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Ganaderos) EXTREMADURA specifies that the production of broccoli has increased from 2,000 to 8,000 hectares in the last decade. Although this figure seems modest compared to maize (over 50 000 hectares) or tomatoes (between 22 and 23 000 hectares), the area of broccoli continues to increase.
For professionals, several factors explain this remarkable progression of broccoli surfaces. Because farmers can start a production of broccoli between two traditional crops, but also by the demand of the international markets which remains strong and leads to the prices on the rise. This makes the crops cost-effective and encourages farmers to extend the surfaces.
In Spain, the region of Murcia is the No. 1 for the production and export of broccoli with 12,000 hectares of the total 26,000 hectares dedicated to broccoli in the country.
