Blueberry thrill
Chile
Friday 07 December 2007
The rapid growth of the Chilean blueberry sector continues a pace, as initial figures indicate the final 2006-2007 deal will be up 40% on 2005-2006.
The fruit has been one of the strongest performers in a season which to date has seen grape growers successfully overcome unfavourable weather conditions and the stone fruit sector struggle but gain ground following a dip in volume in 2005-2006.
As of late March, the tail end of the blueberry exporting season, growers had shipped 20.1 tons, 78 percent of which was destined for the world's biggest consumers of the blue fruit, Canada and the US.
This dramatic increase in volumes - 14.4 tons were exported in 2005-2006 and just 11.3 tons in 2004-2005 - thrusts Chile higher up the global production league table which is currently led by the US.
