For strawberries which are one of the country's key export commodities, an air shipment strategy has been implemented in mid-2021 to reach Singapore and Hong Kong markets. The strategy was successful but export volumes fell from last year's record.
According to MAFRA, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, strawberry exports for the 2021/22 season reached 3,400 tonnes and USD 50.8 million in value. Or -24.4% in volume and -15.3% in value compared to the 4,500 tonnes and 60 million USD for the 2020/21 season.
MAFRA believes that this decline should be attributed to a decrease in national strawberry production, and not to the air shipment strategy. Implemented in mid-2021 to respond to logistical disruptions caused by Covid-19, this shipping strategy has been successful, allowing exports to Singapore and Hong Kong.
The gradual reopening of borders and the return to normal trade do not call into question this shipping strategy. MAFRA plans to continue this initiative, with Korean Air, and even expand it to more markets. In addition to current markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam, other new markets will be developed such as the Philippines and Mongolia.
The Korean government has identified strawberries and table grapes as key export products. Providing help and support for the whole process including promoting these fruits as premium products in foreign markets. The combined export value of strawberries and grapes reached USD 103.1 million in 2021.
