Greek farmers still block roads
Greece

Greek farmers are still blocking today the Country’s main roads for the fifth consecutive day and are creating further disruptions despite a fund of 500 million euro has been announced by the government today to compensate for the crisis in the sector.
According to the farmers, this government’s package is “insufficient”, especially considering that some of that was already due to them last year.
Thousands of tractors are therefore blocking the main Athens-Selonica national motorway and connections between the centre and the north-west and the border with Bulgaria - where all crossing points will be closed today. There are also blocks on other roads around the Country and on the island of Crete.
The government has reacted to the crisis in the sector by passing a package including fiscal relief on the price of fuel and compensation for cotton, olive oil, cereal and other crops.
The Country’s farmers, however - which make up more than 10% of the national labour force and have suffered hundreds of millions of total annual losses because of falling prices - are demanding guaranteed minimum prices for their produce.
