While the export of Rubyred grapefruit and Navelina and Fukumato orange varieties was permitted from October 22, 2015, the same date as the previous season. The report published by the Aegans Union of Exporters shows a small harvest for 2015/2016.
Although the majority of citrus is produced in the Mediterranean region, it must be remembered that most of easy peelers varieties is produced in this region. The export of produced Satsuma mandarins should start from October 26. The vice president of the Union of Aegean Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables says a decline of about 30 percent is expected for this variety and the quality is not at the rendezvous.
He adds that there is no problem of production and quality of fruit grown in the Mediterranean region but the political and economic situation of their main buyers, Russia, Syria, Iraq and countries in the Middle East, with the exchange rate of the dollar and the euro, concerned exporters. The prices obtained for the Okitsu variety whose export began October 8, barely covers production costs.
