Italy in the lead for consumption of fruit and vegetables in Europe
FJ
The effects of the economic crisis do not seem to have impact on food purchases of Italians.
Italy is still above the European average with regard to purchases of fruit and vegetables. In the country, 23% of the population buys from 4 to 6 times a week fruit and vegetables (the European average is 19%), and 37% of Italians eats fruits and vegetables twice a day (European average 31%).
With regard to organic fruits and vegetables, in 2012 Italians have increased consumption by 7.8% over the previous year.
These good results appear in the last comprehensive survey of the Nielsen Institute. Italy is therefore the most diligent nation of Europe, more for its long-standing culinary tradition, than for the WHO guidelines.
