Brazil has officially authorized the import of strawberry seedlings from Egypt, following new phytosanitary regulations issued by the Agricultural Defense Secretariat under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The ordinance, published on March 13, establishes strict requirements to ensure pest-free imports.
To comply, Egyptian exporters must provide a phytosanitary certificate confirming that the seedlings are free from specific pests and diseases, based on laboratory testing. Additionally, shipments will be inspected upon arrival, with samples taken for further analysis in accredited laboratories. The cost of testing and sample transport will be covered by the seller.
If quarantine pests are detected, the shipment will be rejected or destroyed, and Egypt’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) will be informed. Brazil may suspend imports until a Pest Risk Analysis is reviewed.
Strawberry seedlings fall under the Mercosur Common Nomenclature (NCM) for fruit-bearing trees and are subject to a 2% import duty under the free trade agreement between Egypt and Mercosur.
