In Spain, which is the first garlic producer in Europe, the region Castilla-La Mancha is at the top with a production stimulated by PGI garlic .
Spain is the largest garlic producer in the EU, followed by France and Italy.
In Spain, Castilla-La Mancha region has more than half the total acreage devoted to garlic. Production is distributed in the region over the districts of La Alcarria La Mancha, Mancha Alta Mancha Baja, Manchuela and Centro, belonging to the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo.
The region is also home to the production of PGI Ajo Morado Pedroñeras.
This is one of the most important productions of the European Union, with an average of 60 million kilos of garlic purple. This figure represents over 50% of regional production, about 30% of Spanish production and about 20% of the EU.
