In Switzerland, the industry in the potato sector has requested an additional import quota. Due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Swisspatat is the cross-industry organization for the potato sector. Swisspatat has applied to the Federal Office of Agriculture for an additional import quota, from April 1, of 8,000 tonnes of table potatoes.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional quantities are needed in the short term. The creation by consumers of a back-up stock and the multiplication of meals taken at home have caused an increase in potato sales, very much above average.
The additional quota requested is linked to the current exceptional situation. But as soon as the first Swiss potatoes appeared on the market, professionals in the sector hoped that the commercial brands would be able to turn to the national harvest.
