Indonesia wants to revive its production of garlic to avoid imports.
Indonesia is seeking to develop its production sufficiently to enable it to achieve its zero-import target in 2018.
The Department of Agriculture is targeting 100,000 hectares of cash crops next year. If 1 hectare can produce 5 tons of garlic, imports will no longer be necessary.
Garlic consumption in 2015 totaled 500,000 tons, of which 20,000 tons were locally produced. The remaining 480,000 tons came from China and India, according to the Ministry data.
