ABPM – The Brazilian Association of Apple Producers got its members together in a General Assembly Meeting on April 08, in order to present and analyze the main figures of the segment until then, referring to the 2007/08 season.
The harvest of the variety Gala has been completed consolidating the previously premeditated number, a drop of 15% compared to the 2006/07 season. The Fuji harvest is in advance of about 20 days and it should also register a breaking around 15%. Therefore, the 2007/08 harvest comparing all varieties should be around 840,000 MT against 993,000 MT harvested in the previous season. The stock of the variety Gala established in Brazil on 31/03/2008 was around 228,476 MT, the lowest in five years, even having its harvest starting about two weeks earlier than it traditionally occurs. With regard to marketing on the domestic market, the growth experienced during the month of February for the variety Gala has been consolidated, as the sales volume in the month of March were about 7% higher, and the turnover 36% superior than it was in same period last year. The explanation for this performance, in addition to the increase in consumption of the Brazilians, is the excellent quality of the Brazilian Apple this season. The volume of apples directed to the European Union until March 31, was of 31,829 MT, about 30% less than the amount established in 2007. The countries that recorded the biggest falls were Germany (-57%), Italy (-46%), France (-44%), Portugal (-42%), Spain (-39%) and The Netherlands (-33%). The average price recorded in 2008 for the above group was USD 0.68 / kg, about 12% higher than the registered in same period in 2007. On the other hand, exports to European countries not members of the European Union had grown more than 110%, with outstanding sells to Russia, which purchased until the end of March around 1,010 MT, against only 64 MT until then in 2007. Overall, the Brazilian exports accumulated 39,080 MT up to March 31, having its volume 21% lower than the same period of 2007, a turnover of about USD 26 million, that means, 11% less than the registered in the previous year, and an average price (FOB / port) of 0.66 USD / kg, that is, 12% higher than the 0.59 USD / kg observed a year earlier.
