According to statistics published by the Union of Exporters, cherries accounted for half of fruit exports in May, with an increase of 286% in quantity and 1.159% in value! The quantity exported amounts to more than 8,200 tonnes in comparison to 2,123 tonnes in May 2014.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions which resulted in a decrease in flower and therefore a drop in production, overall production of cherries in Europe has lowered, the exporters have no trouble finding buyers.
Turkey accounts for 20 percent of the world's cherry production. In 2013, it produced 494,000 tons of cherries, in 2014, 446,000 tons in 2015 and 531,000 tons.
The main importing country is Germany, followed by Russia, Bulgaria, Iraq and the Netherlands.
Despite the problems with Russia, exporters are confident thanks to the opening of the Chinese market, which is the subject of intense negotiations for 5 years. According to the President of the Union of Fruit and Vegetables of Uludag, this mark a historic turning point in the export of cherries.
This export should begin this year, after a visit to a Chinese expert team to assess the export logistics chain to China.
