During the month of January 2024, mango production in Peru totalled some 30,535 tonnes, showing a significant decrease of 83.2% compared to the 181,543 tonnes reported in January 2023. These data come from the technical report "Peru: Departmental Technical Panorama - January 2024" of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
This drop in mango production during the first month of the year was influenced by unfavourable weather conditions that affected the flowering and fruiting stage, causing the appearance of the anthracnose disease.
Although Piura's crop experienced a drastic reduction of 88.0%, it remained the main producer at national level, followed by Lambayeque (-58.4%), Ancash (-50.5%), Ica (-27.6%) and Cajamarca (-5.3%), which together accounted for 87.5% of the national total.
On the other hand, other regions such as San Martin (-87.3%), Lima (-81.0%), Tumbes (-75.6%), Ucayali (-63.6%), Ayacucho (-61.1%), Moquegua (-55.4%), Apurimac (-46.9%), Arequipa (-14.7%), Huanuco (-7.2%) and Loreto (-0.3%), also experienced a decrease in mango production.
However, an increase in mango production was observed in Amazonas (+21.1%), La Libertad (+18.3%), Pasco (+5.6%), Junín (+2.2%) and Huancavelica (+1.6%).
As for national grape production, in January 2024 it reached 224,751 tonnes, showing a contraction of 12.6% compared to the 257,096 tonnes recorded in January 2023.
This decrease was due to earlier harvests in the departments of Piura and Lambayeque, which decreased by 98.5% and 96.5%, respectively. On the other hand, an increase was observed in Arequipa (+51.9%), Cajamarca (+33.0%), Lima (+12.3%), Ica (+10.3%), Ancash (+9.6%), San Martin (+9.0%) and La Libertad (+0.3%).
