Algeria wants to produce all its requirements for dried vegetables by 2021.
In order to cover 100% of the country's needs and reduce its imports, Algeria has developed a program which will extend until 2021 to increase its area and develop its production of legumes.
The area under cultivation currently produces about 1 million quintals of all species (beans, peas, beans, chickpeas and lentils) or 35% of national needs. Approximately 1.9 million quintals are imported.
With the program developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, the area devoted to legumes will pass nationally from 85,000 hectares to 218,000 hectares in 2021. The areas dedicated to lentils and chickpeas will have to increase from 30,000 hectares to 170,000 hectares.
To achieve the objectives, the Ministry of Agriculture wants to reduce fallow land and mobilize the entire sector (agronomists, researchers, farmers, professionals) to disseminate the necessary information and technical assistance.
FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) works to raise awareness of pulses in order to face climate change and increase production to secure food in the world. The UN has proclaimed "2016 the International Year of Pulses".
