As interest in functional and health-conscious foods continues to grow worldwide, yacón is poised to strengthen its position in Peru’s export portfolio.
Peruvian yacón exports surged in the first four months of 2025, reaching 77.9 tonnes, a 32.2% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2024. The growth enabled access to 14 international markets, according to Peruvian media outlets.
France emerged as the leading destination, accounting for 30.6% of total shipments, while Colombia followed with a 21.9% share. The remaining 47.5% was distributed across a range of other countries, reflecting the crop’s growing global appeal.
Yacón, increasingly recognised for its nutritional benefits, is gaining traction as a natural low-calorie sweetener. It supports healthier food options and plays a role in diversifying Peru's exportable superfoods.
The crop is primarily cultivated by small-scale farmers and family-run agricultural operations, with main production zones located in Cajamarca, Huánuco, Amazonas, Pasco, Puno, and Cusco. Smaller plantations also exist in other regions, contributing to the broader agro-export landscape.
