Vegetable availability and wholesale prices will vary significantly by crop.
Prices for a number of vegetables in Japan are expected to exceed normal levels in October 2026, while potatoes and onions are forecast to remain cheaper than usual, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
MAFF expects above-average prices for Chinese cabbage, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, cucumbers, eggplants and green peppers.
Prices for daikon, carrots, cabbage, green onions, tomatoes and taro are forecast around the five-year average. Potatoes and onions, meanwhile, are expected to trade below average levels.
For the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market, overall arrivals of the 15 designated vegetables are forecast to remain broadly normal. However, supplies of Chinese cabbage, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and taro are expected to fall below usual levels.
