Switzerland removing food origin indication
Switzerland

Switzerland is again advancing the proposal to remove the “declaration of origin” (country of origin) on the labeling of foodstuff products originating or processed in European Union Countries (whose freedom of movement is enshrined in the principle “Cassis-de-Dijon-Prinzip”).
Farmers, and the Swiss Authority for the consumer, qualify this decision as a “risky measure”, as the country of origin represents a “condition factor” when making a purchase. Furthermore, they argue that it is not possible to deprive consumers of their right to be informed.
On the contrary, consumers are supporting the removal of the statement of the country of origin as they expect that there will be a decrease in prices, which are experiencing an alarming and continuous rise in recent months.
