In Pakistan the mango sector has to face complicated conditions: production is falling due to negative weather conditions, international trade has slowed down due to the pandemic and demand is falling.
According to the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Pakistan, the country will suffer a sharp drop in its production of mangoes. In the province of Punjab, which produces about 70% of Pakistani mangoes, production is expected to fall by 35% this year, in the province of Sindh the decline is estimated at 15%.
The irregular weather conditions linked to climate change have impacted the production of mangoes. This drop in production will affect exported volumes, which are expected to fall by 30,000 tonnes this year. Pakistan exported 130,000 tonnes of mangoes last year.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, international trade has slowed significantly. Travel restrictions, suspended air routes, rising transportation costs. Finding new markets was difficult and existing markets reduced their demand. In London (Great Britain), the prices of most varieties of Pakistani mangoes doubled, which caused a sharp reduction in demand.
