Smaller sizes of avocadoes becoming more popular and look more affordable

Drought in Chile, lower yield in Spain and South Africa, short season in Peru has influenced situation on world’s avocado market. One of the biggest avocado exporters, Westfalia Marketing BV, shares some market trends.
Westfalia Fruit grows, sources and ripens, packs, processes and markets quality avocados and other exotic and top fruits all year round.
Arnoud Degener, sales at Westfalia Marketing BV, based in the Netherlands, shares that last months prices for avocados were very high and are still high for specific sizes. “Big sizes are in shortage, so prices for them are higher. Avocado market was influenced by water shortage in Chile and Spain, in Peru the sizing of the fruit was very small with lack of big sizes”, - Mr. Degener explains.
“Smaller sizes look more affordable at the moment. There are more offers for smaller avocadoes. Certain countries like Switzerland prefer bigger fruit. Supermarkets aim on smaller fruits: sizes 18, 20 (typical supermarket size). The supply of sizes 12 to 18 will be limited in the coming weeks, so prices are expected to remain at a high level”, - he concludes.
Westfalia can sell green avocadoes, pre ripen, fully ripen in all kind of packing: netting, flow pack with GlobalGAP, IFS, Sedex SMETA, SIZA, BRC and HACCP certificates. The company also develops ecological packing with less plastics or recyclable.
Westfalia Marketing BV supplies to Central, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, including Germany, former USSR countries, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia etc.
