Estimate of cabbage production

According to representatives of one of the vegetable seed companies, there is a trend towards the development of vegetable production and processing in Ukraine. It can be measured by the value of seeds sold to growers - 4,5 million Euros in 1999 and 24 million Euros (5 times more) in 2005. What is characteristic, Ukrainian growers are less interested in production of white cabbage, and they shifting towards Chinese cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
The acreage used for cabbage production in Ukraine is estimated at 50,4 thousands hectares), with domestic true-breeding varieties being the most popular. Hybrid varieties account only for 11% of production. The acreage used for cabbage production in Russia is estimated at 172 thousands hectares, with hybrid varieties being the most popular. The yield varies significantly depending on the region, and ranges from 16 MT/ha in the South to 45 MT/ha in the North. Russian customers prefer cabbages with a weight of approximately 1-1,5 kg (early varieties) and 1,8-2,5 kg (late varieties). In 2006, Russian producers received for cabbage about 0,08 euro/kg, while the retail price was about 0,17-0,23 euro/kg.
