The tomato is a Christian food

Religious extremism even threatens food.

The Egyptian Salafist Group (Popular Egyptian Islamic Association) has put a message on Facebook asking its supporters not to eat tomatoes because it is a Christian food - a cross is revealed when you cut a tomato in half.

The message is on the Lebanese website NowLebanon and Hürriyet from Turkey and is causing controversy.

The Salafist group had to clarify its position. An update on Facebook indicates that there is no prohibition on eating tomatoes, but you must be careful to cut them so as not to to reveal the cross shape.
