In Pakistan, the kinnows industry is in turmoil. Production is down and export volumes are falling
Local media report that a few years ago Pakistan exported over 400,000 tonnes of kinnows, but this season the volume exported is expected to be just 200,000 tonnes.
PFVA (All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association) has repeatedly alerted the government to the difficulties and challenges faced by kinnows producers. It has asked for help in renovating orchards and developing new varieties of kinnow.
The kinnow currently grown was introduced to the country 60 years ago. Since then, its natural resistance to disease has declined. The vagaries of the weather have also had an impact on the kinnow variety, with production declining in both volume and quality.
