The world production of papaya exceeds 6.8 million tons per year, according to data from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). There are more than 52 varieties of papaya and the Carica species is the most cultivated.
Papaya is typical for tropical and subtropical zones and for this reason its cultivation is especially developed in Brazil. Currently, it is the second largest papaya producing country in the world with an annual production of 1,517,696 tons.
90% of international shipments of Brazilian papaya are made by air due to the fragility of the fruit, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea). Most of these shipments go to Europe.
