Spanish exports of fruits and vegetables fell by 7.4% in January

In January, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports suffered a decrease of 7.4 % in volume compared to the same month of the previous year, with a total of 1.2 million tons.
In terms of value, there was a slight decline compared to January 2020 (-0.16 %) with a total of 1.488 million euros.
This fall was caused by frosts and growth recession of the majority of plants, impulsed by the storm Filomena. The other reason was the slow normalization of trade relations with the United Kingdom due to the blockade of trucks in December.
Deliveries to this destination decreased by 7 % compared to the same month in 2020, totaling 53.863 tons.
Vegetables. The volume of vegetable exports showed a year-on-year decrease of 12.5 % in the first month of this year, totaling 628.503 tons.
In terms of value, there was a decrease of -1.5 %, totaling 811 million euros.
The most affected vegetables are peppers, 125.022 tons (-5 %); lettuce, 93.741 tons (-12 %); cucumber, 90.942 tons (-16 %), tomato 89.088 tons (- 23%), among others.
Fruits decreased in volume by 1.7 %, totaling 627.252 tons, increasing by 1.5% in value, with a total of 677 million euros, according to the latest data from the Customs and Excise Department of the Tax Agency.
