EU imports more and more fresh fruit and vegetables

The Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and France are the EU countries that import the most fresh fruit and vegetables from outside the EU (Photo: ecomercioagrario.com).
Over the last 5 years, EU imports from third countries have increased in volume and value. This increase continues.
FEPEX, on the basis of Eurostat data, announces that EU imports from third countries amounted to 11.4 million tonnes and 11,785 million euros in the first half of 2021. This represents an increase of +3% in volume and +2% in value compared to the same period in 2020.
Among the EU members, the Netherlands is the country that imports the most fruit and vegetables from third countries, with 3.7 million tonnes in the first half of 2021. This represents 32% of the total and a growth of 7% compared to the same period in 2020.
Spain follows with 1.2 million tonnes imported, i.e. +11% compared to the same period in 2020, then Belgium and France with a similar volume of 1.1 million tonnes and Germany with 1 million tonnes.
These figures for the year 2021 confirm the upward trend observed over the last 5 years, with +18% in volume and +23% in value. In 2016, imports amounted to 12 million tonnes and in 2020 they will total 14.2 million tonnes, with the value rising from €12,218 million to €15,052 million, according to data from the European Statistics Office.
