Exports to Europe are falling, those to Asia increased
FJ
Chilean fruit exports to the European market has declined in 3 years, while exports to Asia have sharply risen.
The reduction would amount to 12% according to Expordata. For the 2007-2008 season, Chilean exports to Europe totaled 813,113 tons, while the last harvest was of 710,236 tons.
Table grapes have decreased by 21%, 12% for apples, and 36% for pears and plums.
In Asia, however, exports increased significantly of 23% for shipments in Chile, with 261,693 tons. Demand from other countries in South America also increased by 10% with strong growth in Brazil.
Among the explanations for this change: overcharge of the European market , decreased consumption after the economic crisis and low price of the euro against the dollar, while demand from Asian markets and Latin America is increasing.
