Since 2011, Japanese food products, especially fruits and vegetables, have been subject to strict import restrictions on the Chinese market (Photo: japan-guide.com).
China banned imports of Japanese food products following the March 2011 accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. These restrictions concerned fruits and vegetables produced in more than 10 Japanese regions including Fukushima.
According to Japanese media, talks between Japan and China to try to lift this Chinese ban on Japanese food products have not taken place for more than a year and therefore the current situation will continue.
After the accident in March 2011 at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, about 55 countries and regions imposed restrictions on the import of food products from certain regions of Japan. Today, most of these countries have lifted the restrictions like Taiwan last February or like Great Britain which will lift the restrictions by the end of June.
So far, only 14 countries and regions have maintained the restrictions, and 4 countries and regions including China and South Korea continue to restrict the import of Japanese food products. China had banned the import of food products from 10 prefectures including that of Fukushima, then extended it to other prefectures, in particular for fruits, vegetables, dairy products and tea leaves.
A certain warming of relations between the 2 countries in 2018 led to a single lifting of Chinese restrictions, concerning rice originating from Niigata prefecture.
