Prices of peppers of all varieties decreased at end 2007 due to the high production of this vegetable in the last weeks of December.
Though sector experts thought that pepper was going to be one of the best products in terms of sales at Christmas time, the largest production was reached between 10 and 15 December, which in the end made prices drop. According to Andrés Góngora, provincial secretary of COAG, "We know that every year Christmas is synonymous of fall in the value of the products, however this year it has been more noticeable than other previous campaigns".
Another factor that has led to the decrease of the price has been the so-called “standstill of Christmas”. This means that there is a week or two when trading to international markets stops, so the production that is emerging get to Europe in January. "These days, relations with other markets are paralysed, we also must take into account this aspect", said Góngora.
In early September it was forecast the delay the beginning of campaign was due to have. According to Juan Ruiz, a marketing expert, "the only reason for this decline in prices is the overproduction, since there are no more excuses. Quality remains very good and the maturation process is correct".
