Fruit consumption is increasing in Ukraine. In 2020 the volume of imported fruit reached almost 1 million tonnes, i.e. + 8% compared to the previous year and 1.5 times compared to 5 years ago.
According to information published by UCAB (Ukrainian Agribusiness Club), in 2020 Ukraine imported almost 1 million tons of various fruits. This recorded volume exceeds the volume reached in 2019 by + 8% and represents 1.5 times the volume imported 5 years ago.
Leading imports, bananas accounted for 33% of the total volume imported. Mandarins (19%) and oranges (9%) follow, followed by lemons (7%), peaches (5%) and grapes (5%). Then persimmons (4%), grapefruits (4%), kiwis (2%) and apples (1%).
In terms of growth performance, the highest rates come from grapefruits and persimmons which have recorded a doubling of imported volumes over the past 5 years.
"Imports consist mainly of fruits and berries which are not grown in Ukraine due to unfavorable climatic conditions. The only exception being apples, but its share in total imports is very low, only 1%" said Svitlana Lytvyn , UCAB analyst.
