Peru is in the process of negotiating a trade agreement with India, a country that has positioned itself as the sixth destination for Peruvian exports in 2022, mainly due to mining exports. Peruvian agricultural experts highlight the need to implement measures to promote value-added shipments to India as part of a comprehensive strategy.
They highlight the importance of diversifying the exportable supply, not only limited to mining products, but also including processed agricultural products and services, among others. They also emphasize the need to strengthen local value chains and encourage innovation in the production and technology of exportable products.
Other measures include improving product quality through international standards, training workers and entrepreneurs in advanced production techniques, and promoting public-private collaboration to develop joint strategies.
Regarding a possible FTA between Peru and India, this agreement could benefit both countries by facilitating trade, promoting bilateral investment and stimulating technology transfer. It would also allow the diversification of the exportable supply and preferential access to the other country's market.
Regarding the potential of Peruvian agroexports in India, the growing demand for Peruvian products such as quinoa, superfoods, coffee, tropical fruits and organic products stands out.
In 2023, the main agricultural products shipped from Peru to India were blueberries, ginger, cocoa, Brazil nuts and quinoa.
