New strawberry varieties under review for Huelva’s next season

Strawberry producers in Huelva, Spain, are awaiting IFAPA’s study results on the performance of current and new varieties to plan the next season.
In Huelva, Andalusia (Spain), red fruit producers are closely watching the results of studies conducted by the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) to determine which strawberry varieties could be planted next season. The goal is to improve profitability, use water more efficiently, and expand the use of soilless cultivation systems, which are becoming increasingly important in the region.
According to IFAPA’s preliminary data, Marisma and Red Sa‑yra are currently the most planted varieties, while Fortuna and Rociera have declined compared with previous seasons. Researchers are also evaluating the performance of new varieties, including Dunas, Marisma, Ondina, Adelanto, and Belvedere, under both conventional soils and hydroponic systems.
Soilless cultivation offers several advantages, such as higher profitability, earlier harvests with better market prices, and reduced water consumption, noted IFAPA researcher Luis Miranda. The final results of these studies will help local growers choose varieties that combine market potential with more sustainable production methods for the next strawberry season.
