Brazil celebrated a historic milestone in 2023 with mango exports, generating revenues of close to $315 million, surpassing the previous record of $249 million in 2021.
According to Brazil's Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, supported by Embrapa's Mango Market Observatory, there was a 15% increase in export volumes (266,000 tonnes).
Ninety-three percent of these mangoes come from the prosperous São Francisco Valley in the Northeast region, with the states of Bahia and Pernambuco accounting for 47.36% and 45.42% of exports respectively. Other states such as São Paulo, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará also contribute significantly to the total volume exported.
Despite a slight decrease in national production, estimated at 1.2 million tonnes compared to 1.5 million tonnes in 2022, Brazil managed to maintain its export success. João Ricardo Ferreira de Lima, coordinator of the Mango Market Observatory and researcher at Embrapa Semi-Arid, attributes this achievement to several factors, including crop failures in competing countries such as Peru and Ecuador due to adverse weather conditions, and continued production capacity in the São Francisco Valley.
For 2024, a promising start to the year is forecast, with favourable prices and an increase in exports, despite a slight decrease in the volume of fruit produced in the region. This optimism is based on a solid start to the year, with a 45.6% increase in exports in the first two months compared to the same period last year.
