With the 2024 green asparagus season coming to an end in Guadalajara, local growers present a mixed picture.
A farmer from Torre del Burgo mentions that the season started late and was affected by adverse weather conditions, such as frosts in the Tajuña valley, which resulted in a lower production than expected. In spite of this, sales prices have been reasonable, allowing the crop to remain viable.
Currently, the province has approximately 600 hectares dedicated to green asparagus, although interest in this crop has declined due to various challenges. These include the difficulty in finding labour, strict legislation, the impact of climate change and the lack of generational replacement. The producer highlighted the complexity of managing seasonal workers, mostly from Eastern Europe, as one of the main obstacles for farmers.
However, local farmers are optimistic about the future of the crop in Guadalajara, especially after obtaining the Protected Geographical Identity (PGI), which suggests a viable and profitable avenue for agricultural development in certain areas of the province.
