Today, tomatoes in Paraguay stand out due to a significant increase in their prices, particularly in supermarkets. According to Paraguay's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Giménez, the national production of tomatoes for May will not be enough to cover the entire demand.
Giménez explained the measures taken to ensure a continuous production of tomatoes, including imports from Caaguazú, where the price per kilo at the farm stands at G. 10,000. This plan aims to guarantee stable sales for producers and thus ensure continuity in production.
Faced with the option of importing tomatoes from Chile or Bolivia, the minister emphasised the need to encourage local production instead of assuming the high costs that imports would entail. He also pointed out that a gradual increase in tomato production is expected, although he does not anticipate an abundance of the product next month.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) is in the process of distributing seeds, with rigorous monitoring of their germination to ensure that they are used correctly and to avoid their misuse, in response to previous problems of misappropriation of resources. This strategy seeks to strengthen control and efficiency in the production of tomatoes and other important crops such as locote and onions.
