A publication of Agreste Conjoncture, issued by the French Ministry of Agriculture, announces that French production of tomatoes for the fresh market is estimated at 474,635 tonnes, based on data as of November 1, 2023, down 9% year-on-year and 12% on the 2018-2022 average.
The 2023 national area planted with tomatoes for the fresh market is estimated at 2,661 hectares, confirming previous estimates and identical to the 5-year average.
The decline in production volume is attributable to a drop in greenhouse production to 436,236 tonnes (-9% over 1 year), due to lower yields resulting from energy savings. Outdoor production is estimated at 38,399 tonnes, up 19% year-on-year.
According to Agreste, between January and September 2023 and compared with the same period in 2022, French tomato imports reached 379,239 tonnes (-1%) and exports 231,828 tonnes (+7%).
