In Sonora (Mexico), the analyzes carried out by technicians from the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) and the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) in the primary production and packaging units of Cantaloupe melon, linked to the outbreak of Salmonella spp. in the United States and Canada, showed negative results for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms.
The samples were subjected to analysis using accredited and approved laboratory techniques, and in none of them were present the strains of Salmonella Sundsvall and Salmonella Oranienburg, as reported by the Mexican authorities.
Given this situation, Senasica called on the producing and packing sector to reinforce measures to reduce contamination risks, to guarantee safety in the production of melons intended for both national consumption and export.
Additionally, in February 2024, the Senasica mobile laboratory will move to Sonora to implement a new program for analyzing water samples, products and surfaces on site. The purpose is to verify the existing conditions regarding safety in the production of Cantaloupe melon, reaffirming the commitment to food safety.
