The start of the winter vegetable season in the Vega Baja (Alicante) is facing difficulties due to irrigation restrictions caused by the crisis in the reservoirs. This affects crops such as potatoes, broccoli and artichokes.
Although farmers have already prepared their land and bought seeds since June, they now face cuts of up to 57% in irrigation. The Orihuela Water Court has called for water use to be optimized, considering the seriousness of the situation. José Bernabé, water judge, warned that the supply is not assured, despite previous commitments.
Antonio Ángel Hurtado, president of Alcachofa Vega Baja, estimates a 20% increase in the area planted with artichoke. Although the situation is uncertain, growers are confident that conditions will improve, as lower temperatures require less water than in summer. Even so, they continue to depend on rainfall in the headwater reservoirs.
The water shortage also affects crops that use alternative sources such as reclaimed or desalinated water. Asaja Alicante has criticized the management of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, highlighting the lack of foresight. According to the organization, up to 30,000 hectares could be affected by irrigation cuts. This could lead to a shortage of vegetables on the market and a price increase for consumers. The need for the transfer of water for the Segura basin is more urgent than ever.
