Exports have also declined
Tomato production in Almeria has fallen by 36.88% in the last decade, according to data from the Price and Market Observatory of the Andalusian Regional Government. From 1,090.79 million kilos in the 2013/2014 season, it has dropped to 688.47 million kilos in 2022/2023. However, the value of tomatoes has increased by 16.11%, from 604.83 million euros to 702.24 million euros.
Exports have also decreased by 33.22%, from 530.43 million kilos to 354.22 million kilos in the same period. Despite this drop, the ratio of exports to total production has shown slight changes, indicating an adaptation of the market.
These data reflect the challenges of the agricultural sector in Almeria, possibly due to changes in cultivation practices and market conditions. Although production has decreased, the increase in value suggests a transition to more valuable crops or an improvement in efficiency.
