Spain, the leading European producer of garlic, estimates that by 2019 its surface area will decrease by 8 to 10%.
At its last meeting the Working Group on Garlic of the Spain-France-Italy-Portugal Mixed Committee analyzed the sector data, foreseeing a reduction in areas cultivated in Europe.
This meeting took place in Las Pedroñeras, Cuenca (Spain), in the absence of the representatives of Portugal. Crop data for the 2017 and 2018 crop years in different countries were examined.
In 2018, Spain, with an area increase of 0.2% compared to the 2017 season, continues to be the leading European producer of garlic, with a record of 26,338 hectares cultivated and a production of 270,949 tons. In France, the estimate of the area of the 2018 crop reaches 2,700 hectares for a production of about 20,000 tonnes. In Italy, the area in 2018 is 3,473 hectares with a production of nearly 30,000 tonnes.
With regard to the forecasts for 2019, Italy and France expect a maintenance of the cultivated area compared to previous seasons. However, for Spain, the forecasts indicate a reduction in the area of around 8 to 10% compared to the previous season.
