Chilean fruit exporters prepare for new EU packaging rules

Chile’s fresh fruit industry is preparing for new European Union rules covering packaging and packaging waste. Nearly 500 growers, exporters, packaging suppliers and trade specialists joined a webinar organised by Frutas de Chile to discuss the changes.

The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation will generally apply from August 12, 2026, although many requirements will be introduced gradually. The rules aim to reduce packaging waste, increase recycling and expand the use of recycled materials.

Exporters were advised to review all primary, secondary and transport packaging, including plastic, cardboard, paper, wood, glass and metal. Early priorities include preparing technical documents and declarations confirming that packaging meets EU standards. Later requirements will cover labelling, material identification, recyclability and compostable labels attached directly to fruit.

Companies may also be treated as packaging manufacturers when their brand appears on a product, giving them additional compliance responsibilities. Frutas de Chile plans to publish a question-and-answer document and hold another webinar as further details become available.
