Growers in Paraguay are perfecting their production methods and are now able to harvest abundant quantities of tomatoes despite the scorching summer heat. In contrast to past times, when tomato production in the country during the summer season was little or none, the situation is improving.
According to Silvio Riveros Núñez, president of the National Union of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Paraguay, many farmers now recognize that, through the implementation of appropriate technology and technical knowledge, it is feasible to achieve a successful harvest during all months of the year.
Riveros Núñez urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) to focus on the hiring and training of technicians, who in turn must transfer their knowledge to the country's farmers. He argued that Paraguay can become self-sufficient in the production of tomatoes and grow them throughout the year.
On the other hand, Amadeo Báez, technical head of the Directorate of Agrarian Extension (DEAG) of the MAG, mentioned that there is currently a shortage of technicians to assist all producers and more specialists need to be hired to meet the demand. In addition, he highlighted the availability of seeds and technologies that make tomatoes more resistant to adverse weather conditions, thus allowing successful production throughout the year.
