Argentine apple exports have shown significant growth in the first two months of 2024, reaching a total of 7,300 tonnes, according to local media. This represents an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year, although there is also a slight fall of 9% compared to the average of the last 5 seasons.
According to statistics from the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA), Brazil has regained its position as the main destination for Argentinean apple exports. In contrast, last year, Paraguay occupied this prominent position.
So far in 2024, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia have accounted for 92% of Argentina's external apple sales. These three countries have become the main export destinations for the product.
In order to determine the future trajectory of Argentine apple exports this season, two variables will play a fundamental role: the domestic market and the exchange rate. According to market operators, a significant recovery in domestic consumption is not expected in the short term, at least until the end of the first half of the year, which could have an impact on apple prices in the local market.
On the other hand, the exchange rate is another crucial variable to take into account. Many hopes of increasing Argentine apple exports are linked to the evolution of this variable. However, the uncertainty about the possible exchange rate delay and the lack of governmental announcements about a devaluation could affect foreign sales of apples this season.
