Cambodia, which exported 110,512 tonnes of bananas in the first nine years of this year, is expected to see an increase in exports. A Chinese company has announced $30 million investment in a banana plantation.
Beijing Capital Agribusiness Group, a Chinese state-owned company, has announced plans to invest $30 million in a banana plantation. The company plans to purchase 1,500 hectares of land for banana cultivation.
Just prior to this announcement, AQSIQ (China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) had just authorized 4 other Cambodian companies to export to the Chinese market. This now brings the total number to 9 of Cambodian companies allowed to ship bananas to China. The combined areas of these companies represent 10 000 hectares of bananas.
Industry professionals believe that exports to China will continue to grow. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Cambodia exported 110,512 tons of fresh bananas in the first 9 months of the year, mainly to China, Vietnam and Japan.
